The Mantra is ... NO TAX INCREASE
FOR TWO and one-half years now, we have heard the Republicans telling us from every possible media outlet that the "AMERICAN PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN ... NO NEW TAXES" or a multitude of similarly sounding sound bites. Of course, what the Conservatives mean by that is no tax increases on the wealthy because nobody has proposed tax increases on anybody else. And they equate the wealthy with "job creators". The problem with that of course, is it is a bunch of hooey, just as is their basic message.
For two and one-half years, the American people, in poll after poll after poll after ad nauseam, have told the Republicans to stuff their message and stop lying to us. Today is no different. Only 23%, of Conservatives, that's 2 3 percent of their base, think that the debt ceiling debate should be settled with SPENDING CUTS ALONE; that is a very poor showing, don't you think. Fully 73%, in one poll, of Americans think wealthy Americans and Corporations should help share the pain of this debt crises. Exactly how deaf are the Conservatives? Another 6% don't care or don't know so you have almost three quarters of America that think the Conservative position is, to be polite, untenable.

To me, these number suggest the Conservatives, along with President Obama (only because he is the President) are going to pay a steep price if they get their way, and the economy suffers because of it. The Democrats will have proof positive for a long time to come, first eight years with President Bush, and then this, that the Conservatives don't have a lick of sense when it comes to economic policy.
There really is a reason behind the old paradoxical saying that Republicans always seem to lead us into economic disaster and Democrats always lead us into war. Go figure, but just check your history books.

ME, I don't begrudge anyone their vote in previous election provided they were based on a little research. I also agree that Reagan accomplished quite alot during his term. Not all of it was good but this is besides the point. The problem is the number of people who have no idea what the the truth about his tax policies were. Armed with nothing other than rhetoric they scream for a return to them. No amount of evidence will change their minds about his contributions to the problems we face today. These people are a prime example of people who refuse to think for themselves and instead, wait to have their opinions handed to them. I usually end up admitting I was wrong about at least 1 thing a day. I am actually greatful for people who prove me wrong. It shows me that I still retain the ability to learn. These people don't realize it is possible to consider a differing opinion with out swearing blind allegience to that idea. Here in the south it is simply they way they were taught to learn. A lot of this isn't their fault. Continuing to hold on to ignorance is their fault. There is too much information available for people not to find some. I know there is a lot of garbage out their masquerading as truth. I also know that it is possible to weed the garbage out. All it takes is a desire to learn the truth and that my friend, is the problem. Very few people have any interest in the truth. They want their every thought and belief handed to them. They don't care if it's nothing but a load of garbage. They have been given an opinion and didn't have to work for it.
I atttempted to verify some info for a hub I wrote and came across a differing statement posted by the Hertitage Foundation. Upon first glance this story looked legit. They had 8 different sources listed and even references to congessional findings. Once I started checking the sources I discovered it was all a buch of crap. Even the references to congress brought up the Heritage site and opinion pieces they had written.
I do understand that it is easy to make fools out of the majority of those in this country and I rarely find examples from the right that aren't attempts to do just that. I am not saying this is limited to the GOP. I know that both sides find it easier to do what they want, for who they want when they convince their faithful that the lies are truth. I simply don't have a lot of tolerance for those who never question anything they are told to believe.
BTW, I have voted in all but 1 election since Ross Perot ran. Don't hold that first choice against me, lol. It did get me interested in politics and this country's future.
Great Hub My Esoteric. I voted for a sensible tax increase as a Democrat. The Far Right Republicans are enslaved by Grover Norquist's signed pledge not to raise taxes. His gospel is to shrink government this way. They need to cut this clown loose. The GOP has a deficit cutting plan that has a 4-1 advantage between spending cuts and revenue raisers. What more do they want? Eric Cantor wants John Boehner's job. He is holding this up. He has no other purpose. He disgusts me. Pure naked ambition.
The GOP doesn't even pretend to listen to American voters any more. They still insist on spreading the lies about tax increases. Reagan would never have been elected for a second term if he hadn't raised taxes twice in his first two years in office. he ended up raising taxes 11 times in 8 years and the Tea Party sticks to the lie that we need to follow his example of cutting taxes. His first tax cut that was supposed to reduce the already high unemployment sky high. It was his tax cuts that finally began to bring unemployment under control. Do those in the Tea Party care about the truth about Reagan? Of course they don't,they continue to scream for tax cuts and to leave the loop holes open. Very few Tea Baggers are in the top 1% of wealth in this country and yet, they continue to demand everything those who are, ask for. In almost every meaningful catagory, Reagan was the worst President we had since WW II. This is who the Tea Baggers have chosen to worship. Reagan was the one responsible for making America the largest debtor nation in the world. When he went into the white house America was the largest net creditor nation in the world. We went from holding a net of 140 billion dollars to a debt of 550 billion dollars in the 8 years he was in office. This is the Tea Party's version of a saviour we're talking about.
The GOP doesn't care what the American People ant or say. The GOP serves the top 1% of this country and that will not change. American citizens can't come close to paying GOP politicians what the insanely wealthy and Corporations can offer them. They don't care if they destroy the country or not, they know they have a bright future with those who will be left standing after the collapse of this country.
Reagan contributed to the diparity in wealth while he was in office. Under his leadership the top 1% in this country were granted a 65% increase in wages. The botton 99% managed a 6% increase that didn't even keep up with inflation. This is the policy the Tea Baggers demand for this country.
To answer your question, np they aren't smoking dope. They are smoking the fine cuban cigars and drinking the 100 year old brandy that came with their monthly bribe package.

Thanks again HS, I do appreciate your comments. I can't believe the power that Norquist has built up; I bet Limbaugh is jealous!
A man after my own heart, Stump. I certainly don't hold Ross against you, he served a very useful purpose and had some needed ideas, just a bit of a nut.
If you get through some of my hubs, you will find I start talking about RWAs, Right-wing Authoritative followers. They are an identified psychological type that exhibit the characteristics you just mentioned ... they actually can't help it, believe it or not. If you are interested, you will see references to an Amazon.com available book in my hubs to a book titled "Conservatives Without Conscience" by John Dean (think President Nixon). It is a scientic-based analysis what makes the people who make up the ranks of the Tea Party and current Conservative army tick. I found it fascinating. You feel scared and sorry for them at the same time.
